For 30 years, the Bimini Basin has been the starting place for the Cape Coral Christmas boat parade. Bimini sits just west of the downtown area in Cape Coral. Its development is seen as a catalyst to bringing young and old to the area by giving them attractions. This includes retail, restaurants, and multi-family living, a hotel and a parking garage. City leaders also discussed zoning changes to allow a 40,000 square foot building.
Bimini Basin has always been known to become a mixed-use development that may include: hotels, apartments, town homes, mixed-use residential space, retail space, office space, restaurants, a market, a theater, and park renovations including a basin walk and bike trails.
In March, City Manager John Szerlag received verbal approval from City Council to start soliciting bids from potential partners around the U.S. for the project.
Kevin Crowder, a director with the development consulting and management firm Redevelopment Management Associates, outlined the possibilities for the development in March. He said the "sweet spot" caps housing at 50 units per acre with an eight story height limit.
Crowder said a goal of the project is improving the basin's tidal flow, and that the city is considering enlarging the basin's existing 24 to 36-inch pipe. The city also received a grant from the state for a possible mooring field program, he said.
After being dug some 50 years ago by the Rosen Brothers….the Bimini Basin continues to weave its magic over the downtown Cape Coral waterways.
Representative's from Cape Coral planning division are proposing two mooring field options. The first option will provide for 18 moorings and vessels up to 35 feet long. The second option will provide for a total of 15 moorings; 12 designated for vessels up to 35 feet long and 3 mooring buoys for vessels up to 45 feet long.
According to the presentation, the planning division recommends adopting a mooring field ordinance and a mooring field management plan, including specifications on pump-out requirements and length of stay.
Council is expected to discuss a mooring field ordinance in June, according to the mayor's assistant, Pearl Taylor.
